WIPO and ESIC formalize groundbreaking collaboration
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) have announced a groundbreaking collaboration to strengthen Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms in the global esports and video games sectors.
This partnership aims to bolster the effectiveness of ADR mechanisms in the esports and video games industries, addressing the unique and complex disputes that arise in these fast-evolving industries. The collaboration will launch the International Games and Esports Tribunal (IGET), a specialized, not-for-profit dispute resolution body.
IGET offers professional, accessible ADR services addressing a broad range of issues, including anti-doping violations, player discipline, intellectual property conflicts, and contractual disagreements. The tribunal is tailored to the specific needs of the esports and gaming sectors, providing a much-needed robust dispute resolution framework in a sector that has traditionally lacked such structures.
WIPO brings its Arbitration and Mediation Centre’s expertise to the table by providing customized ADR procedures suitable for the highly international and technical nature of esports and gaming disputes. These procedures include mediation, arbitration, expedited arbitration, and expert determination, all handled by neutral experts with deep knowledge of gaming, law, and digital content. WIPO’s global reach and recognized neutrality help parties from different jurisdictions resolve disputes efficiently while maintaining industry integrity and supporting innovation.
The collaboration between WIPO and ESIC through IGET aims to:
- Provide tailored and professional dispute resolution specifically adapted to esports and video games.
- Address the global, cross-border, and fast-paced nature of disputes in these sectors.
- Enhance fairness, transparency, and ethical standards in esports through robust conflict resolution.
- Support long-term collaboration among stakeholders by reducing zero-sum outcomes and encouraging compromise.
- Help sustain growth and innovation in esports by maintaining a fair and secure competitive environment.
In addition to the implementation of ADR mechanisms, the partnership will focus on awareness-raising initiatives, identifying and training specialized neutral dispute resolution experts, and exploring additional areas of mutual interest. The Esports Integrity Commission, a leader in esports integrity, will play a crucial role in these efforts.
This partnership represents a pioneering effort to embed sophisticated ADR mechanisms into esports, thereby strengthening legal governance and integrity in the global esports and gaming ecosystem. By providing a fair and equitable platform for dispute resolution, this collaboration is poised to make a significant impact on the future of esports and video games.
