Xpeng initiates European electric vehicle manufacturing in collaboration with Magna Steyr
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng has made its foray into the European market, partnering with Magna Steyr for the production of its smart EVs. This strategic move by Xpeng aims to avoid tariffs imposed on Chinese EVs by the European Union last year.
According to reports, the partnership underscores Magna's commitment to innovation and flexibility in meeting the evolving needs of the automotive industry. The production line, a subsidiary of Magna International, will be responsible for the serial production of Xpeng's vehicles, with the initial models being the G6 and G9 sport utility vehicles. The serial production is scheduled for the third quarter of 2025.
Magna Steyr, under the ownership or close association with Siegfried Wolf, the former Magna CEO, who owns Steyr Automotive, has planned a long-term partnership with Xpeng since at least 2025. Production of the Xpeng G6 and G9 models at Magna Steyr is set to begin in September 2025.
Xpeng has also initiated operations at its research and development (R&D) centre in Munich, Germany. The R&D centre will play a crucial role in the development of new models, including electric sedans for the European market.
The news of Xpeng's European production line comes at a time when the company is experiencing significant growth. In the first eight months of this year, Xpeng has delivered 271,615 EVs, tripling the sales figures from the same period last year.
In other news, Xpeng had to recall the majority of its P7+ models due to a steering issue. However, the company has managed to bounce back, demonstrating its resilience in the face of challenges.
Magna is well-positioned to support Xpeng's ambitious goals for the European market. The company's southern Austria plant will be used for vehicle production. By partnering with Magna, Xpeng hopes to establish a strong foothold in the European market and contribute to the advancements in the automotive industry.
The Just Auto Excellence Awards celebrate innovation, leadership, and impact in the automotive industry. By entering these awards, companies can showcase their achievements, elevate their industry profile, and position themselves among top leaders driving automotive industry advancements. With its entry into the European market, Xpeng is poised to make a significant impact and potentially win recognition at these prestigious awards.
